How does a college student find volunteer work in the field I'm interested in?

I'm 18 years old and very serious about my future ambitions, I want to work in advertising and marketing, and am currently hoping to gain as much experience as possible. I realise experience is more valuble than grades in some cases and I'm hoping to find PART TIME work in a company that is related to this field, or perhaps work in a department of a reputable company. I am willing to do this voluntary therefore I am willing to work for free- outlining how badly I am craving for some experience. I am a bit wary on where to begin and how I should go about this. I am finishing my A-levels in summer 2007 and haven't got any relevant qualifications this field requires, therefore I'm hardly spoilt for choice. What can I do?

Thank you for your time! Any advise is much appreciated!

Hey, good for you! Great attitude!

It may sound odd, but working in retail can give you some really good insight into marketing and sales because that's really where you see how well it works. So, finding a local store that needs help could be a great place to start. Basically, any kind of sales experience will be useful as "background" - help you do your advertising/marketing job better, ultimately, because of your understanding of consumer behavior.

Also, working in one of the advertising media is great experience - newspaper, magazine, radio or tv station, even a Website that uses advertising to draw traffic or has advertisers on the site.

You could also approach local businesses wanting to build their sales (and very few won't be interested in THAT), and offer low-cost assistance because you would be receiving OJT (on the job training).

Great attitude! Good luck with your career!
Reply:borrring !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Write off to some local companies and say something similar to what you've said. You may get lucky.
Reply:all the above answers are very good advice. every company that sells a product or service has a marketing and advertising department. so get writing to the media and retail outlets. its your best bet
Reply:If I were you I would seek out the companies I could find in this related situation and send them a resume and make sure your cover letter explains just what you are saying here that you are willing to voulunteer in order to receive the experience in your field. There are a lot of companies out there who just love your kind of attitude. I hope you find what you are looking for. Good Luck!!

Hopefully this has given you some insight.
