Should I relocate to find better work, or stay in my hometown?

I have a college degree, %26amp; I live in a small town where there aren't many good paying jobs - %26amp; ever fewer related to my field (journalism and PR). I have a job now, %26amp; I enjoy it, but it pays dirt.

Being a writer I can work from home mostly, but I don't currently have any projects or clients. So I need a steady, reliable job.

All of the GOOD paying jobs are out of town, which require me to move or commute at least an hour or more each way, each day. I really don't want to move away. It's nice here, the cost of living is low, I'm comfortable, my friends %26amp; family are here, %26amp; I just like the area a lot. But there aren't many opportunities here. I could move, %26amp; make more money, but when I factor in either the cost of living in or near a big city, or commuting everyday ... I'm not really any better than I am right now.

The easy answer is: relocate. I know. But it's just not that simple when my heart is here. Do I move %26amp; find better work, or do I follow my heart and stay?

Any advice?

Should I relocate to find better work, or stay in my hometown?
you need to decide pros and cons about staying where you are and relocating. then follow your heart
Reply:depends why you work,

to exist or to advance
Reply:I moved about an hour away from where I grew up, because of better employment opportunities. I ended up liking where I live now alot more than where I grew up. You should ask yourself, if it is just fear of something new that is holding you back. If it is fear then you should move. If you really love you hometown, and make a reasonable living, and are fulfilled, I would say you should stay.

Good luck!
Reply:You need to determine what's more important to you...your friends and family, or making more money. It's a tough choice, but with some thought, and maybe making a pro-con list, you should be able to make the decision that is best for you.
Reply:as soon as you have exhausted your resources in your small town, and have not found a job, then you could move to find work...you can still look for work in your small town, or even become an independant writer at some point, then move back. it's always going to be there! good luck.
Reply:Leave and live someplace else, just for the experience. You are from a small town, move to a big city. You can always come back home.
Reply:Sometimes money moves us. Sounds like you need to move forward and lets face it you can always go home if all else fails but you will never know unless you get moving!
Reply:follow your heart and stay but go to that city that's an hour away for a few days and sell yourself as an independent contractor.

look for freelance work and then travel that hour distance when you need to that way you have the best of both worlds
