Considering a move to Hong Kong. Can I find non-teaching work being able to only speak english?

Born canadian, white male, 26... with more then desireable credentials.Is not knowing Cantonese going to hinder my chances of finding work. I;ve traveled to HK 3 times, staying for 1 to 2 months each time. but living there would be different.


any advice links, or personal stories on the matter is welcome.

not that familiar with HK, but know a few westerners there. They all don't know the language and didn't have a problem finding a job.


English Teaching jobs are the easiest but not knowing what kind of credentials you have its hard to say.


i suggest either contacting a friend/contact you have in HK, or finding yourself a head hunter.

Teaching work isn't easy to find in HK either. There are too many family members of expat workers.





How are you going to get a visa? Who's your sponsor? You can't slum in HK--it's not Thailand. They are very efficient and they will find you.
Reply:Most Westerners in HK work and live there without problems. It all depends on your background and whether your education and experience is in a field which is sought after, such as IT, finance, marketing, management, etc. Otherwise, your chances of finding a well-paid job are pretty slim. And you do need a well-paid job to afford the high cost of accommodation, even if for the rest (food, etc.) the cost of living is fairly low.
