What's the best way to find work in the UK as an American citizen?

I'm moving to England in January and I'd love some advice on finding work and obtaining visas beforehand, etc. (the more specific the better)

I am an American working in the UK. I got a job before coming, but that's not to say you can't get one once you are here. Make sure you bring enough money to live for a few months before moving. And consider the exchange rate. Rent on a typical place can run about £500 (which is like $900). Probably another £175-200 for bills and £150 for monthly groceries. I had to provide my landlord with a letter confirming my employment. I also had to provide tenency agreement, letter from employer and utility bill confirming my address in order to open a bank account. The whole thing was a pain in the ***, but I had those things. I moved in August, but my wife didn't come until January. She got in touch with a recruitment agency and found work in a few weeks. Yea, she is doing odds and ends temp jobs, but there have been opportunities for permenant positions. She hasn't taken them because she is working on getting her equivalent qualifications for being a vet nurse in the UK that she already has in the US. As far as a visa, I'm not sure you can get one unless you have a job. You might be able to find a temporary one. I would advise you come over with a normal passport and interview with a recruitment agency to find work, once they find you something. Then, come over again. After you start, get working on the visa so that you can stay for an extended time. My work visa lasts for 3 years, but that's not to say you can get something for longer. My position last 3 years, so I got a visa to match. You have to get in touch with a UK embassy in the US. Look it up online as there are many consulates that do NOT handle Visas. ONly the embassies do this and they are regional. I was living in GA and my regional embassy for handling visas was in NYC. So, make sure you check it out before wasting you time on the phone with morons.
