Where can a UK male in his fifties find work?

I have a friend in his fifties, living in the Manchester area, who has just been made redundant. He doesn't have much skilled experience, other then working for a rubber plant for 15 years. He's finding it hard finding work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reply:tell your friend to sign on with employment agencies [Manpower is good for non-skilled workers] and also to keep visiting Job Centre Plus.


Does your friend drive? If so, he might be able to get a driving job with a company in Manchester.





Also, does your friend have access to a computer? If so get him to put his CV on Monster.com or maybe you can do this for him.

Reply:It would be a lot harder as there is an age discrimination floating around. The best way is to talk to friends and family who knows where there`s an opening.Applying on the normal


way (ie. applying via adverts.,sending CV) would be an enormous waste of time.Sorry for the negative answer but i know through experience of friends.

Reply:Im only 27 and im finding it very hard to find work,age shouldnt be a factor,i used to work as a cleaner with a 79 year old woman and she was a harder worker than me.He has allot of experience of work.15 years in the same place will look great on his cv it shows he is commited to work.I think he will find one in tie he just has to keep phoning for jobs and one will come allong eventually

Reply:Hey! I'm 51 and I was made redundant in January so I can answer this one. I went from wanting a higher salary to wanting the same salary as I had at my last job to just taking any salary to get a job. As long as he makes enough to pay his bills and save a little, he won't need a flash salary. The line 'I realise I have to start at the bottom' is useful for us 50yearolds in interviews. Best thing for him to find group interviews, like at call centres or financial institutions because they appreciate maturity. (That's what I did.) Banks do online apps to start and the process is long, but I did get offered a job finally at one, low pay, but long-term stability. No matter how he applies, tell him to GET ON THE PHONE after he submits the application if he really wants a job. They WON'T call him due to his age, he has to call.
