Career question. How can I get back into the work force and find a decent job without references?

I got fired from my job 2.5 years ago. I was immature, had a bad temper, and learned alot since then. I have a college degree but haven't been able to find work. I went through a depression/suicide.

Now i'm trying to get back into the work force. I been isolated and have no references. How can i get a job if i don't know anybody?

Please no rude posts/spam. Thanks.

Be honest then get going...sounds like you may be a little bit sensitive to get back in the work atmosphere/
Reply:Just be honest with the employer of your choice. Tell him/her exactly what happened and you'll find someone to take you. Even if you got fired, use that job as an experience. Your college degree is a big plus too. Most importantly, have confidence, be hopeful, and expect good things to happen to you and good things will come. Good luck.
Reply:I agree with the first answer... be positive, talk to people about how you came back from depression, etc... and got yourself a college degree. IN the meantime, think about what else you can do for your life at the cost of a delivered large pizza... :) Seriously... I have a LEGIT resource for you and it's a very big deal... check it out and let me know what you think. Go to website listed below in source. Read it through on the about page.
Reply:I believe you're on the right track, asking for help. Many people with this situation do volunteer work to fill in the gaps. Service is good for the soul and for the resume. You can get glowing references from folks when you volunteer. There are also organizations you can go to that will help you get back into the job force. There are many articles online which might benefit you. You need only to google, getting back to work or something of that sort to find these types of resources.

Your medical issue and records is your business and not that of the workplace. Do not mention the suicide attempt. Medical records are protected by law. You can say you had some personal issues (like family) which took your attention. Do not lie, just do not offer and keep from over emphasizing the problem.

Do allow them to know the correct time gap.

If you feel that your last job situation needs to be discussed , explain as you did here that you were immature and needed time to work on personal character defects. You could tell them of treatment, if for instance you were treated for alcohol, substance abuse. Do not go on about emotional issues.

Your reason is genuine and provides the honest excuse for past behavior and the 2.5 gap from the workforce; but the work world will not, necessarily, see it this way. They might not want to take the risk. Don't give them too much info.

It's a tough situation , but you are protected by certain privacy laws around your medical records. One of the few pieces of privacy we have left, I'm sorry to say.

I wish you the very best!
Reply:As an employer myself I would advise you first of all to be honest on your aps. Put your previous work experience, put that you were fired, that will discuss in interview. Tell them what you have stated here except I wouldn't stress too much the depression episode. Not that I'm saying not to reveal that just don't put too much emphasis on it. You don't want to seem like you are making excuses for your past behavior, oly that you have matured and learned a lot through it. I would apply for entry levl positions even though you have a degree, it will be easier to find someone who will give you a chance. Try to find a comany that has room for advancement within the company so that when you prove yourself you will have that opportunity. Find personal references, a neighbor, a church member etc... Volunteer your time somewhere, that will give you references and look good on your app. It may take some work but you CAN do it. Don't give up if you don't get a favorable response the first few times. Someone will give you a chance if you are sincere. Best of luck to you
