I will be starting my degree BA in media and cultural studies in september at Kingston, I am hoping to get into the advertising/PR side of things. I've read a lot of bad press about those with media degrees struggling to find work in relavant sectors?
Will I find work with a media degree?
Success in media (entertainment induistry) sort of depends on how realistic your aspirations are, and your determination when things get rough. While earning your degree you can also work in local television which will give you experience, connections, and help pay the bills. Film and television are very related to each other. Reply:Oh please. I'm sure you'll get a job. I'm doing a Biology degree and don't know where on Earth I'll get a job after graduating. You're in a better boat.
Reply:All graduates find getting their first jobs tough. Try and get some work experince in your summer break, and see if there's any extra-curricular stuff at the Uni you can get involved in - anything to pad out your CV at the end.
Reply:If you study hard and follow the advice on experience from other answerer there should be only moderate difficulty in getting in there amongst those other 'tigers'.
Good luck. Make a difference.

Just to add to the other suggestions, have a look at the graduate employment site, Prospects, at http://www.prospects.ac.uk/links/signpos... Although Media Studies is not specifically listed here, under Media/Communication Studies you’ll see information on career areas, job options, case studies and contacts, for example. In addition, towards the top of the page you’ll also see a link to ‘What do graduates do?’ This link provides information on job destinations of recent graduates. Remember that when you graduate, you can avail of other Prospects resources such as the occupational planner, job search and CV check: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/ShowPage/...
It would also be useful to contact the Careers Department at Kingston to find out about more about graduate employment prospects with a Media Studies degree. If you’re interested in student employment, then also ask the Careers Department about access to opportunities that might be relevant to your degree and useful for your future CV.
Postgraduate study may be another option to widen future employment opportunities. For information on courses, costs and potential funding sources, see: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/links/pgstudy... In some instances, employers may consider support (contribution towards costs or time for study, for example) for postgraduate study, if courses are closely linked to the job role. Apart from conventional postgraduate study routes, postgraduate study through supported open learning is also available at The Open University http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/search/sh...
I hope you find this useful for your career planning and wish you well in your degree study.
